Predicate Proposal - CAS Registry Number

Field Name: CAS Registry Number

Definition: CAS Registry Number is a unique numeric identifier assigned by CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society that owns the CAS Registry. The CAS Registry is a collection of chemical substance information.

A CAS Registry Number can contain up to 10 digits, divided by hyphens into three parts.

CAS Registry Number will only be applicable to entities that are chemical elements or compounds. Entities that are named after a chemical compound should not have CAS Registry Number data.

The CAS Registry Number for a chemical entity can be obtained by using the National Library of Medicine PubChem database, CAS Common Chemistry, https://commonchemistry.cas.org/ or other public government sources.

Tooltip definition of the predicate: CAS Registry chemical substance number

Type of value (one of the following): text

# of accepted values (one of the following): single

Constraints: Should only be applied to entities that are chemical elements or compounds.

Citation Required?: No - the ID functions as its own citation as the URL for the CAS Registry page can be formed out of the CAS Registry Number. ie ‘50-67-9’ corresponds to https://commonchemistry.cas.org/detail?cas_rn=50-67-9

Examples of proper use:

Serotonin’ ‘CAS Registry Number’ is ‘50-67-9’ - Citation: Serotonin | C10H12N2O - PubChem

Examples of improper use:

Copper (company)’ ‘CAS Registry Number’ is ‘7440-50-8’ is incorrect because this entity is not the chemical element Copper, but instead a company with the same name as the element.

Usage in other schemas:
Wikidata: CAS Registry Number - Wikidata

@jen Could/should we configure this so that it automatically constructs a valid URL for each CAS Registry Number?

Looks like there’s a pattern: for “50-67-9” it’s https://commonchemistry.cas.org/detail?cas_rn=50-67-9

Oh yes, great point! I updated Citation Required to be ‘no’ instead of ‘yes’, with the following:

Citation Required?: No - the ID functions as its own citation as the URL for the CAS Registry page can be formed out of the CAS Registry Number. ie ‘50-67-9’ corresponds to https://commonchemistry.cas.org/detail?cas_rn=50-67-9
